Microsoft Role-based Certifications
Technical-level: Fundamentals, Associate & Expert

Cloud technology has become a major component of how services are delivered to customers. It's creating new roles and expanding others. To stay current, certifications need to include this technology. Microsoft has launched new role-based certifications to do just that.

There are three certification levels with the new structure:

  • Fundamentals (optional)
A good starting point for those new to the technology and who are lacking foundational skills. Fundamentals certification is entry-level and earned by passing a single exam. Fundamentals is not required for Associate-level certification and may not be offered for all products.

  • Associate
Earning an Associate certification shows you are keeping pace with today's technology. You must pass the required exam(s) to receive an Associate certification.

  • Expert
The Expert credential is the top level. Requirements vary by product/technology. In some instances, there is a required prerequisite of a specific Associate-level certification.

Microsoft Certification Exams

To become Microsoft certified you must pass the designated authorized exam(s). In addition to multiple choice, exams will contain active screen scenarios, drag-and-drop options, and even case studies that address situations you would encounter in the real world. Performance-based testing gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in ways that align with the way you actually work.

Students register directly with Pearson VUE for technical-level Microsoft exams. In some cases, you may be able to test from your own location. See Online Proctored for requirements.

Transition Exams / Retiring Certifications
The new role-based certification model of Fundamentals, Associate, and Expert is replacing MTA, MCSA, MCSE and MCSD certifications. Transition exams might be available for a limited time to candidates who have only completed part of an MCSA, MCSE or MCSD certification path. Per Microsoft, if no transition option is available such individuals should still take the original required exam(s) to complete their MCSA, MCSE or MCSD certification, but do so quickly as all affected exams are expected to be retired within six (6) months of the new exam availability.
