Overview
This six-session course is designed to give you a basic appreciation and understanding of the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. No prior exposure to statistics is required. The course is taught as a computer lab workshop, including strategies of team problem solving. The emphasis is on the application of techniques and software to analyze data, rather than the derivation and memorization of formulas. Microsoft Excel is used for calculations and analysis, but an introduction to the SAS software package is also included.

Topics include:

• Basic descriptive statistics
• Sampling distributions and the logic of inference
• Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals for a single mean or proportion
• Difference of means tests
• Introduction to correlation and regression

Participants should bring a basic scientific calculator (estimated cost $10-$25). (1.8 CEUs)

Prerequisites
A working knowledge of algebra and MS Excel are required.
