The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®) is a framework of best practice guidelines and approaches intended to facilitate the delivery of high quality information technology (IT) services.

ITIL outlines an extensive set of management procedures that are intended to support businesses in achieving both quality and value for money in IT operations. These procedures are supplier independent and have been developed to provide guidance across the breadth of IT infrastructure, development, and operations. There are three ITIL certification credentials: Foundations, Practitionerand Manager.

IT Service Management (ITSM) employs ITIL best practices and in goes into additional areas such as enhanced processes and implementation.

CERTIFICATIONS

ITIL certification: Foundation, Practicioner, ManagerWhat is ITIL Certification?
There are three levels of certification:

Foundation Certification. The Foundation Certificate enables people to understand the terminology used within ITIL. It focuses upon foundation knowledge with regard to the ITIL Service Support and Service Delivery sets as well as covering generic ITIL philosophy and its background. It is a prerequisite for the Practitioner's and Manager's Certificates in IT Service Management.

Practitioner Certification. This is a qualification on the specific disciplines within the ITIL Service Support or Service Delivery set, including customer and IT organization communication. It focuses upon the understanding and application of the specific processes within IT Service Management discipline.

Manager Certification. This is aimed at experienced professionals, who will be involved in the management of service management functions.

ITIL Version 3
In 2007 version 3 of ITIL was published. This adopted more of a lifecycle approach to service management, with greater emphasis on IT business integration. In addition, there was a clear translation process, and alignment with ISO 20000 (international standard for IT Service Management).
