Android is a free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform. Android offers a full stack: an operating system, middleware, and key mobile applications. It also contains a rich set of APIs that allows third-party developers to develop great applications.
In October, 2009, Gartner Inc. predicted that by 2012, Android would become the world's second most popular smartphone platform. Shortly thereafter, Verizon released the popular Droid, the first mobile device using Google’s Android 2.0. This and other devices present a huge new opportunity for independent programmers and corporate developers who were waiting for a robust open-source mobile development platform.
The Android SDK includes a comprehensive set of development tools. These include a debugger, libraries, a handset emulator, documentation, and sample code. Independent software developers can take advantage of The Market, a centralized site where users search for, download and purchase applications.
