Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Security+ candidates have at least two years of technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security. The CompTIA Network+ certification is also recommended.

CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ Recertification
Effective January 1, 2011, all new CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ certifications will be valid for three years from the date the candidate is certified. After three years, those certifications must be renewed.
Individuals certified in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ on or before Dec. 31, 2010, will be considered certified for life. For individuals certified on or after Jan. 1, 2011, these certifications can be maintained by passing the most current CompTIA exam prior to the three-year expiration date.
Security+ Exam Retiring
The current version of CompTIA Security+ is exam code SY0-301. The previous version, exam code SY0-201 retired as of December 31, 2011.
A+ Certification Exams
CompTIA A+ 2009 objectives (220-701 & 220-702) will be retiring on August 31, 2013, and candidates currently studying these objectives should plan to complete their exams before this date.
The CompTIA A+ 220-801 & 220-802 objectives became available October 9, 2012, and both sets of objectives will run concurrent until the retirement of the 2009 objectives on August 31, 2013.
Please note: Candidates CANNOT ‘MIX’ the 700 and 800 series of exam objectives. Passing one 700 exam and one 800 series exam does NOT qualify for a CompTIA A+ Certification. BOTH exams must come from the same series of objectives. One CompTIA A+ certificate is earned upon successfully completing both exams. A+ Certification exams are offered by Pearson Vue Testing.
